Our Embassy in Washington has been hosting a series of events in the run up to the inauguration and will also be providing live updates and photos during the inauguration via our Twitter channel.
On 17 January the Embassy hosted a reception for the Illinois delegation. Over 400 guests were welcomed, including many who are preparing themselves for jobs in the White House and other parts of the new administration.
Prior to the inauguration staff at our Embassy in Washington have been working towards a smooth transition to the new Presidency. Our Ambassador, Nigel Sheinwald, was interviewed about British expectation of the new administration. He said:
"The Prime Minister has met the President-elect a couple of times during the course of the year, and there has been considerable contact with the team that is emerging as we move towards inauguration. We believe Barack Obama is committed to a good relationship with the UK and with the rest of Europe.
The use of international institutions, such as the UN, to a greater degree than in the past is also something that we see as a common goal with the incoming administration. And, of course, we place Afghanistan and Pakistan as among the highest priorities for all of us".
On 5 November the Foreign Secretary congratulated Barack Obama on his election win. He said:
"Britain stands with America in good times and in bad, and we are determined to work in alliance with President elect Obama, after 20 Jan, to take forward the progressive goals that he has set out putting government on a side of people at a time of economic downturn, working for peace and social justice around the world and tackling the shared risk that we all face from terrorism to climate change".
