Jim Murphy MP announces seminars on delivering a global Europe (21/04/2008)

On 21 April Minister for Europe Jim Murphy MP announced that the UK Government would run a series of seminars, in the UK and around Europe, on Delivering a Global Europe.  He said:

“This series of seminars will bring together representatives of Governments and civil society in the UK and Europe to debate our European future.  We will consider everything from welfare, poverty, skills and social mobility to religion, sport and human rights.  How can the EU protect workers’ rights and jobs?  How can we make best use of our ability to live and work around Europe?  What is the place of religion in an expanding EU?  And how does Europe promote universal human rights standards?  A full breakdown of dates and themes is attached.

We want to move on from the inward-looking institutional questions that have dominated the European debate and focus on the issues that matter most to people in the UK and the EU’s other Member States.  The EU has a unique role in the world.  It can take the lead in delivering economic and political frameworks that will ensure a socially and environmentally sustainable future for generations to come.  The seminar series is intended to encourage a British and European conversation about how we can ensure the EU delivers real value for UK and EU citizens.

The Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary have outlined their vision of an “open, outward-looking, flexible, global Europe competing on and prosperous because of its skills, its innovation and its creative talents” and a “model Europe” – reaching out to its southern and eastern neighbours, meeting its responsibilities in the world and leading the way on the environment and human rights.

I am looking forward to discussing this vision of Europe over the coming weeks.  I’m keen to hear how people feel we can maximise the opportunities provided by the EU.”
