BURMA: FOREIGN OFFICE AMENDS TRAVEL ADVICE (18/04/2007)
The Foreign Office today revised its travel advice for Burma. We are no longer advising against all but essential travel the the Burmese side of the Burma/Thai border but advise caution if travelling there.
The revelent summary points now read:
- 'You should exercise caution when travelling to border areas in Burma, particularly those close to the Thai/Burma border where there is a risk from ongoing military activity and landmines. The Burmese government restricts travel to most border areas and there are only a limited number of legal crossing points, which often close without notice. You should not attempt to cross borders illegally or enter restricted areas without permission from the Burmese authorities. See the Local Travel section of this travel advice for more details.
- 'You should be aware that British Embassy officials are not allowed to travel freely outside Rangoon without prior permission of the Burmese government, except to a limited number of destination. Consular assistance in an emergency may therefore be restricted or delayed.'
