Kim Howells sends condolences on Yogyakarta earthquake, 27.5.06

Foreign Office Minister Dr Kim Howells has expressed sadness at the news of the earthquake in Indonesia. He said:

'I was deeply saddened to learn of the earthquake which struck near Yogyakarta in Central Java early this morning.

'Our thoughts are with the Indonesian people at this tragic time and particularly with those whose lives have been directly affected by the earthquake. We have offered our support to the Indonesian Government and are ready to respond to all requests.

'A team from the British Embassy in Jakarta has been sent to the scene to check urgently whether any British Nationals are involved. So far we have no reports of any British casualties. We will continue to monitor developments closely.'
