27 Jan 2006

Foreign Secretary presents Honorary Knighthood to founder of the World Economic Forum, 27.01.06

Professor Klaus Schwab has been awarded an honorary knighthood in recognition of his contribution to UK global priorities of safeguarding the environment and reducing poverty through sustainable development. This was exemplified by the contribution of the World Economic Forum in helping to launch the UK's G8 Presidency themes of Africa and Climate Change in 2005.

Presenting the award in a ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said:

'It is with great pleasure that I am presenting Professor Schwab with an honorary knighthood in recognition of his services to the United Kingdom.

'Professor Schwab's vision and determination has created a unique global forum which brings together politicians, businessmen, young leaders and civil society.'

Professor Schwab has been instrumental in helping to focus concern on climate change and in furthering global understanding of the significance of climate change with regard to business. He has also focussed global attention on the importance of poverty alleviation and development in Africa.
