'Substantive' UK/US talks in Washington

Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, paid a visit to Washington DC on Tuesday 3 February and held 'detailed, focused and friendly discussions' with Secretary Clinton.

Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, paid a visit to Washington, DC on Tuesday 3 February and held 'detailed, focused and friendly discussions' with Secretary Clinton.

During the press conference they both spoke of the shared issues that have brought them together and Secretary Clinton said she was 'delighted to welcome a friend and someone with whom we have a positive working relationship'.

David Miliband also spoke of their commitment to 'renew and refresh the special relationship.'

The talks focused on the Middle East Peace Process, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the latest situation in Sri Lanka, the international community's approach to Iran, and the challenges our governments face dealing with climate change. 

The meeting between the Foreign Secretary and Secretary of State also touched on development issues and preparations for the G20 financial summit in London in April.

David Miliband started the day meeting Senator Mitchell, the US Middle East Envoy before his meeting and press conference with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. In the evening, David Miliband met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and Congressmen Edward Markey and Howard Berman. The four discussed global challenges such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and climate change.
