TRADE AND INVESTMENT

Trade and Investment with the UK

UK exports to Belarus in 2005 totalled £7m. Exports consisted mainly of chemicals, textiles and machinery. Import figures from Belarus for 2005 totalled £276m. Imports consisted largely of oil and oil products. An Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, signed in March 1994, came into force in December 1994.

UK Development Assistance

DFID has no specific programme for Belarus. In light of the EU decision in September 1997, EU Technical Assistance Programme (TACIS) funding has now been restricted to humanitarian assistance, regional projects and those giving direct support to the democratic process. The FCO funds human rights, democracy, development and media projects in Belarus. These include: training programmes for local election candidates; human rights conferences and training seminars; legal development programme for NGOs; information campaigns; training for young Belarusian civil society activists (from NGOs, political parties, independent newspapers etc.); and various youth programmes.
