Lost or stolen passports overseas

If you are abroad, and your passport is lost or stolen, you should report it to the local police as soon as possible. You will need to get a police report, or demonstrate that you have at least made attempts to do so.

As soon as you have done this, you should inform your nearest British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. You will need to report any loss or theft on an LS01 form immediately, and then return the completed LS01 form Lost or Stolen Passport Notification, along with a copy of the police report to the Embassy or Consulate, who will cancel your passport. LS01 forms are available from any British Embassy or Consulate. If you apply for an emergency travel document at the same time the LS01 form is incorporated into that application form.

Identity theft is a growing crime. To protect your identity, please bring or send this form to us as soon as possible. This reduces the risk of someone stealing your identity or attempting to enter the UK on your passport. You do not need to wait until you apply for a new passport. However, if you require emergency travel documentation due to the loss or theft of a passport you should contact the nearest British Embassy, Consulate or High Commission immediately.

Once your passport is reported as lost or stolen, it is electronically cancelled. You will not be able to use it as a proof of identity, nationality, or for any other legal purpose. You must not use it as identification as this may be detected, and it may be seen as a potential fraud.

Also, you will not be able to use it for travel. If you do so, your passport may be impounded by the UK Border Agency at a UK port or airport. If you are travelling overseas, you could face deportation or arrest.  See also Finding your Missing Passport.
