Foreign Secretary echoes call for Eid ceasefire in Syria

Foreign Secretary William Hague: "A ceasefire must be accompanied by genuine commitment from the Syrian regime to work with Lakhdar Brahimi to find a sustainable end to the violence in Syria".

The Foreign Secretary, William Hague, said the following;

“I join UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al Araby in calling on the parties in Syria to respond to Joint UN and Arab League Special Representative Lakhdar Brahimi’s proposal for a cessation of hostilities in Syria to coincide with Eid-al-Adha.

“A ceasefire would help ensure the access necessary to provide vital humanitarian assistance to those in need and could be a first essential step towards implementing the political transition set out in the Geneva Communique. A ceasefire must be accompanied by genuine commitment from the Syrian regime to work with Lakhdar Brahimi to find a sustainable end to the violence in Syria. The onus is on the Assad regime to make the first move by bringing an end to all hostilities as set out in previous UN Security Council Resolutions and the Six Point Plan.”
