Foreign Secretary comments on peace agreement for Mindanao

Foreign Secretary William Hague has commented on the announcement of the framework agreement.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Foreign Secretary, William Hague, said:

“I wholeheartedly welcome the announcement of the framework agreement that has been agreed between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to bring peace and development to Muslim Mindanao. This is a testament to the commitment and vision of the parties.

“The agreement has the potential finally to end the long-running conflict. Full implementation of the agreement by 2016 can bring about peace, security, and development. That will be good not only for Mindanao, but for the whole of the Philippines.

“The UK’s role as a member of the International Contact Group has allowed us to see the leadership shown by President Aquino and the Government Panel and the Leadership of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The UK is pleased to have supported the parties and Tengku Dato’ Abdul Ghafar the Malaysian facilitator during the process. We stand ready to provide further assistance if such a role would be valuable to the parties.”
