UK comments on political situation in Romania

A Foreign Office Spokesperson spoke after the Romanian Constitutional Court's decision of 31 August to invalidate the referendum on the suspension of President Basescu.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

“The UK notes the Constitutional Court’s decision to invalidate the referendum on the suspension of President Basescu after an insufficient number of voters participated, as required by Romanian law.

“We encourage Romania’s politicians to respect this decision and work together to ensure political stability. At a time of economic uncertainty in Europe, it is crucial for politicians of all parties to preserve confidence in Romania by clearly demonstrating the rule of law, judicial independence and the fight against corruption.

“We remain committed to supporting Romania to maintain progress against the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism benchmarks. “
