Foreign Secretary welcomes announcement of Action Group Meeting on Syria
Foreign Secretary William Hague comments on Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan's announcement that an Action Group meeting on Syria will be held in Geneva on 30 June.
Speaking after Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan’s announcement today of an Action Group meeting on Syria, Foreign Secretary William Hague said:
“I welcome Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan’s announcement today that an Action Group meeting on Syria will be held in Geneva on 30 June. I have been in close contact with Kofi Annan in recent weeks about the possibility of convening an Action Group on Syria to address the deteriorating situation on the ground. We discussed this in detail during our meeting in London last week and agreed on the importance of ensuring a political transition to end the violence. Kofi Annan and his team have been developing a roadmap for this which sets out the principles which would allow the Syrian people to decide their own future through peaceful, democratic change. We support and welcome this initiative. It is vital that we bring the international community together in support of Kofi Annan’s six-point plan and the Syrian people, and in particular that we agree action to stop the violence and the principles of a political transition. I hope we can achieve this at the meeting in Geneva which I plan to attend.”
