Foreign Office Minister comments on demonstrations in Sudan
Foreign Office Minister for Africa Henry Bellingham has expressed concern at increasing restrictions on freedom of expression in Sudan following the demonstrations in Khartoum.
Speaking today, he said:
“I am concerned at increasing restrictions on freedom of expression in Sudan that have followed the demonstrations in Khartoum and other towns in recent days. I call for the immediate release of those detained while engaged in peaceful protest, and for the security forces to act with restraint and avoid the use of force in responding to peaceful demonstrations. I am also concerned at growing levels of censorship and restrictions on the media and on the political opposition, including the detention of a number of journalists and political activists. I urge the Government of Sudan to respect the right of its people to freedom of expression.
“These demonstrations underline once again the importance of the Government of Sudan embarking on a process of reform that addresses the needs and aspirations of all Sudanese citizens within an open and democratic framework.”
