Foreign Office Minister condemns the forcible seizure of power

Foreign Office Minister Henry Bellingham comments on the attempted coup d'etat in Guinea-Bissau.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Minister for Africa, Henry Bellingham said:

“I am deeply concerned about reports of an attempted coup d’etat in Guinea-Bissau and strongly condemn the forcible seizure of power. We call for the immediate release of those that are being held and the restoration of constitutional rule. The second-round of Presidential elections due on 29 April should be held as scheduled. We welcome the robust and swift ECOWAS statement which demonstrates the same strong leadership on this issue that they have shown over the situation in Mali.”
