Foreign Secretary visits South Africa

Foreign Secretary William Hague is in Cape Town, South Africa until 14 February as part of efforts to reinvigorate the UK-South Africa relationship.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The visit follows last year’s highly successful Bilateral Forum and recent visits to South Africa by Prime Minister David Cameron, The Prince of Wales, and the Lord Mayor of London.

Britain and South Africa work together on a range of international issues. During the visit, the Foreign Secretary will discuss current foreign policy and trade and investment issues with his South African counterparts, including Syria and the upcoming London Conference on Somalia.

The Foreign Secretary will also deliver a keynote address on “Britain and South Africa: a 21st century relationship” at the University of the Western Cape.

He will attend a training session by the Team GB Hockey Squad for children at a township school - part of the International Inspiration Programme for the Olympic legacy. He will visit HMS Montrose, currently docked in Simon’s Town, where he will discuss defence cooperation with senior members of the South African military. He will attend a UKTI reception aimed at supporting a 15 strong delegation of UK meat exporters. And he will meet members of the Somali diaspora ahead of the London conference.

The Foreign Secretary will travel on to Botswana.
