Engaging with the Burmese Government

Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne met with Burmese Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency U Kyaw Myo Htut on 6 February.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

It was the first time that Mr U Kyaw Myo Htut had called on a British Government minister.

Following their meeting Mr Browne said:

“My meeting with Mr U Kyaw Myo Htut is a mark of the UK’s willingness to engage with the Burmese government in light of the reforms that they have recently undertaken. I encouraged the Ambassador and his government to maintain the momentum for change. I reiterated that the UK government stood ready to respond to future positive actions, and that the world would be watching the upcoming by-elections, expecting them to be free and fair.”

The meeting follows the Foreign Secretary’s visit to Burma in January, when he met representatives of the Burmese Government, as well as Aung San Suu Kyi and members of her party.
