Foreign Office summons Syrian Ambassador over Homs siege
The Syrian Ambassador to the UK was summoned to the Foreign Office this afternoon, where Permanent Under-Secretary Simon Fraser made clear the UK's condemnation of the atrocities being committed by the Syrian regime.
Speaking after, a Foreign Office spokesperson said:
“On 6 February the Foreign Office Permanent Under Secretary Simon Fraser summoned the Syrian Ambassador to make clear the UK’s condemnation of the atrocities being committed by the Syrian regime against innocent civilians in Homs and throughout Syria. He underlined that the UK was appalled by the Syrian security forces’ indiscriminate use of tanks and mortar over the weekend, taking its brutality to a new level and increasing the humanitarian suffering. The Permanent Under Secretary made clear such violence must end now and urged the Syrian authorities to allow immediate access to humanitarian organisations in order that they can respond to humanitarian needs and independently verify the situation.
“Simon Fraser said the UK would continue to work with international partners to support the efforts of the Arab League to end the violence and begin a genuine political process leading to a democratic and peaceful Syria.”
