UK condemns Iran executions

Statement following the execution of Ali Saremi and Ali Akbar Siyadat in Iran on Tuesday 28 December.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

An FCO spokesperson said:

“The UK opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and condemns the execution of Ali Saremi and Ali Akbar Siyadat in Iran on Tuesday 28 December.

We are disturbed by reports that Mr Saremi’s lawyers and family were not informed that the execution was to take place. Full transparency and adherence to the rule of law are important in all cases, but never more so than in those involving the death penalty.

We urge Iran to live up to its domestic and international obligations in this regard.”
