The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is a global statement calling for the end to all forms of gender based violence.

The day begins 16 Days of activism against gender violence, culminating with the International Human Rights Day on 10 December.

Marking the day, the Foreign Secretary said:

'Violence against women undermines our efforts to achieve global security and development. The international community must be united in our condemnation of domestic and gender-based violence, and in our efforts to eliminate violence against women wherever it occurs. Britain will remain committed to this task.'

Vera Baird, Solicitor General, at the Government and Equalities Office also said:

'Tackling violence against women is one of the UK Government’s top priorities, and we fully support the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.

We have to work to change attitudes in order to eliminate violence against women and girls both here and worldwide, and to make it clear beyond doubt that any form of violence against women is unacceptable.'
