EU statement on house evictions in East Jerusalem

21 March 2009

Minister for the Middle East, Bill Rammell, has welcomed the EU statement expressing 'deep concern' over the eviction notices issued to families in East Jerusalem.

The UK strongly supports the EU statement issued after the Israeli government issued eviction notices to the al-Rawi and Hanoun families in East Jerusalem.

Bill Rammell, Minister for the Middle East, reiterated the EU's call to suspend these eviction notices.

He said:

"These eviction notices are not conducive to peace.  We call on the Israeli government to suspend these eviction notices immediately."

"The EU is deeply concerned by the issuing of eviction notices to the al-Rawi and Hanoun families in East Jerusalem. These eviction notices follow other recent orders which adversely affect Palestinians living in East Jerusalem and, combined with the increase in settlement activity in East Jerusalem, further threaten the chances of peace. We have raised our concerns with the Israeli government and call on Israel to suspend these eviction notices immediately and, in addition, to allow the al-Kurd family to return to their home."
