Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, is in New York attending the UN Security Council. He spoke to the media about the escalating and devastating crisis in Zimbabwe.

The Security Council met to discuss Zimbabwe on the afternoon of 15 December. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon updated members on the current crisis within the country.

During the meeting, the Foreign Secretary said that the Security Council had received 'an absolutely devastating report' from the Secretary-General.

He also said "the causes of the crisis are actually very clear and very simple and they speak directly to what the Secretary-General called the disintegration of state institutions."

He referred to the report of the Elders to the Security Council:  "The Elders said and I quote 'What was once a bread basket has become a basket case.'  The situation in Zimbabwe is not simply a stain on Zimbabwe, but it is also a stain on the whole of Africa, a stain on the liberation struggle in Zimbabwe and elsewhere."

The Foreign Secretary continued that the Council should be clear "about the causes of the current crisis:  the misrule, abuse, neglect and corruption of the current Mugabe regime."

On 16 December the Foreign Secretary will be attending Security Council meetings on the Middle East Peace Process and Somalia.
