UK supports Gulf Co-operation Council initiative to resolve crisis in Yemen

Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt discussed the situation in Yemen with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in the United Arab Emirates Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Following the discussion, the Foreign Office Minister said:

“I have discussed the situation in Yemen today with Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates.

We strongly support the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) initiative to resolve the crisis in Yemen. We warmly welcome the proactive role that the GCC have played to co-ordinate a political settlement in Yemen. The GCC initiative represents our best hope for a constructive and peaceful way forward in Yemen.

It is vital that agreement is reached as quickly as possible, to avoid further violence and to enable a new Government to tackle Yemen’s grave economic, social and security challenges. Further delays serve only to foster instability and hurt most Yemen’s resilient but long-suffering people.

We urge all sides to seize this opportunity and finalise an agreement.”
