Curriculum Relevance

The new vehicle of delivery for PSHE and associated vocational units from September 2010 is the Foundation Learning Tier and the Functional Skills Qualification, however, the KBYG resource materials are also suitable for use to support the delivery of Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) services provided by Integrated Youth Support Services such as Connexions and CEGNet

2.1 Curriculum Links

Below is a list of courses which either provide a relevant learning strand within which to deliver the KBYG travel safety messages or specifically incorporate a personal social development module through which to introduce the KBYG resource:-
  • Personal, Citizenship, Health and Economic wellbeing Education (PCHE/PSHEE)
  • Personal and Social Studies (PSS)
  • Personal Development (PD)
  • Personal Social Development (PSD)
  • Functional Skills Qualification
  • PSHE elements of the Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills framework (PLTS)
  • General Studies AS and A level qualification
  • ASDAN Independent living, International links and Sport and Leisure AS modules
  • CoPE 3 qualifications
  • RSA opening minds framework
  • Personal and emotional development strands of the International and Welsh Baccalaureate
  • Other AS/A level courses containing relevant modules of study including:-
    • OCR Geography A
    • OCR Travel and Tourism
    • OCR Leisure Studies
    • OCR/AQA MFL courses
    • AQA Communication and Culture
    • AQA/ Excedel Citizenship Studies

2.2 KS5 Learning Objectives

  • Consider social and moral dilemmas, including the varied attitudes and values underpinning some of the healthy lifestyle issues they encounter in their communities
  • Find information and advice, for example through websites, and learn how to provide information to others.
  • Prepare for change, for example by anticipation the challenges of new and widening social groups as they get older.
  • And by considering the choices they may have to make

2.3 Learning Outcomes:

  • An understanding of the issues relating to travel abroad.
  • An understanding that we are all responsible for our actions and the effects on ourselves and others
  • To begin to understand that there are sources of information available to support effective travel planning

2.4 Curriculum Fit

  • Safe travel fits within the scope of the Every Child Matters five outcomes:-
    • be healthy
    • stay safe
    • enjoy and achieve
    • make a positive contribution
    • achieve economic well-being
  • and the associated 'Youth Matters: Something to do, somewhere to go, someone to talk to', extended learning outcomes for young people:-
    • empowering young people: Things to do and Places to go
    • young people as citizens: making a contribution
    • supporting choice: Information, Advice and Guidance
    • all young people achieving: reforming targeted support
