NATO is currently conducting operations in the following areas:
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) assists the Afghan government in providing security and stability and extending its authority across the country, in order to create a suitable environment for reconstruction and development.
Operation Ocean Shield disrupts and deters piracy in the region, in order to protect sea lines of communication, commercial maritime routes and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Somalia. It also provides assistance to any regional states that request it in developing their own capacity to combat pirate activity, e.g. through forming a local coast guard.
The NATO Training Mission to Iraq (NTM-I), founded in 2004, assists Iraqis in developing an effective, democratically-led and enduring security sector.
A NATO peacekeeping force (KFOR) was originally deployed to Kosovo in 1999, and is still contributing towards safety and security for all citizens there.
The purpose of Operation Active Endeavour is to detect, deter and protect against terrorist activity, through patrolling the Mediterranean, surveillance and monitoring of shipping, including boarding suspect vessels, and providing escorts to non-military vehicles through the Straits of Gibraltar (although this has been temporarily suspended).
The NATO led operation Unified Protector concluded on 31 October 2011. On his first visit to Libya after the end of operations, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said “he was proud of the part the Organization and its partners played in helping the country and the region”.
NATO also provides airlift support to the African Union mission in Somalia.
