Tackling Corruption
Afghanistan has been rated by Transparency International, in 2011, as the joint-second most corrupt country in the world. Corruption hampers socio-economic development and undermines the legitimacy of the Government of Afghanistan.
The Afghan Government entered into important anti-corruption commitments at the London conference on Afghanistan in January 2010 and the
Kabul Conference in July 2010. Whilst there has been progress in some areas, corruption remains a serious problem in Afghanistan.
The UK is a key partner for the Government of Afghanistan on tackling corruption across a range of areas. We are involved with:
- Prevention: supporting Afghan institutions that monitor corruption, public financial management and civil service reform.
- Enforcement: strengthening legal frameworks and law enforcement bodies.
- Accountability: encouraging the Afghan Parliament, civil society and the media to hold the Government to account.
