Afghanistan has made huge progress since the fall of the Taliban regime, culminating in a popular Presidential election in October 2004 and Parliamentary and Provincial elections in September 2005.
The September 2005 polls concluded the Bonn process and demonstrated the Afghan people's commitment to representative democracy. The inaugural session of the National Assembly was held on 19 December 2005.
The UK gave significant support to these two elections and is committed to supporting the development of accountable, responsive and democratic institutions in Afghanistan. The next Presidential elections will take place in 2009.
The Presidential Election 2004
Presidential elections in Afghanistan were held on 9 October 2004, marking an important landmark in Afghanistan's evolution as a pluralistic and stable democracy.
Parliamentary and Provincial Council Elections 2005
Afghanistan held its Parliamentary and Provincial Council elections in September 2005. These were the first such elections for 36 years.
