Global economy challenges

International currency. © Ryan McVay/Getty Images We want to increase international commitment to an open, stable and equitable low carbon global economy delivering higher standards of living.

To achieve this goal FCO staff are working to:

  • protect and promote open markets
  • get key countries (US, EU, China, India, Brazil South Africa, Russia) to take a constructive approach to trade and investment, especially in the WTO
  • improve international economic governance and co-operation
  • better understand how trends in key economies affect the UK
  • encourage key countries to adapt their long-term policies to tackle climate change
  • develop an effective global approach to intellectual property rights – to promote innovation and spread technology to developing countries.

We will do this in partnership with other UK Government departments and by working with countries and through international organisations such as the EU, UN and G8.

Our Global Europe leaflet sets out a new direction for Europe in line with the challenges of globalisation and outlines the priorities for action and climate change measures.
