Baroness Taylor of Bolton, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (jointly with the Ministry of Defence)
Ann Taylor was born in Scotland but brought up in Lancashire. She was the Member for Bolton West from October 1974 to May 1983. She was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Education and Science 1975-76 and to the Secretary of State for Defence 1976-77, and was a Government Whip from 1977 to 1979.
From 1987-2005 she was the Member for Dewsbury and was the Opposition Frontbench Spokesperson for a range of subjects including education and housing. She was Shadow Secretary of State for Education between 1992-1994 and Shadow Leader of the House 1994-1997.
In 1997 she was appointed President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons and then Government Chief Whip from 1998 to 2001. She chaired the influential Intelligence and Security Committee from 2001 to 2005. On 13 May 2005 she was made a Life Peer, and confirmed as Baroness Taylor of Bolton, on 13 June 2005. She was appointed as Minister for Defence Equipment & Support in November 2007, and then the Minister for International Defence & Security on 5 October 2008 – a position she still holds. On 8 June 2009, she was given additional responsibility and made a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the FCO charged with liaising on security and defence policy issues.
