Our world is increasingly interdependent and inter-connected through travel, trade and communications.
The global issues on which we focus in the FCO such as tackling climate change, countering radicalisation and terrorism, reducing conflict and promoting international trade and investment, as well as supporting British citizens in distress abroad, all demonstrate that the distinction between foreign and domestic policies is less clear.
Whether political, social or economic, and as we have seen with the recent global financial crisis, what happens in one part of the world directly affects our own prosperity, security and the way we live our lives.
We work with a wide range UK individuals and groups who help us both at home and overseas to deliver a 'Better World and a Better Britain'.
We also work with UK communities in demonstration of the transparency, diversity and the relevance of the FCO’s work to the British public and businesses.
If you are interested in a particular country then the British embassy, high commission or consulate is your best initial contact point. Go to find an embassy. For information on our work in particular parts of the world see our country profiles.
The FCO works hard promoting human rights across the world but that is a job that can’t be done by us alone. We work at home and overseas in partnership with non-governmental organisations, think tanks and academics. They have helped producing our guides and toolkits.
