London 2012: Promoting Britain to the world

A once in a generation opportunity

As 2012 approaches, the London Olympic Games will focus the world’s attention on Britain. The Games offer unique stimulus to invite people from around the globe to re-examine their views about the UK.

The FCO and our Public Diplomacy Partners view this as a remarkable opportunity to demonstrate the open, connected, dynamic and creative country that is Britain today. Our challenge is to improve perceptions of Britain – and thereby increase the UK’s power to influence.

To mark 1,000 days until the Games we launched our own worldwide campaign, "See Britain through my eyes”.  The three year progranne of events was welcomed by Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Campaign Ambassador Sir Steve Redgrave. All these activities are designed to showcase the best of modern Britain.

The Foreign Secretary said: "The Olympics will shape many people's idea of Britain. And the run up to the Olympics is a chance for us to say 'This is what modern Britain is.'"

London also marked the 1,000 day milestone with news that more than 5 million people are participating in London 2012 Games-related projects. In addition, millions of children and young people around the globe are already benefiting from the London Games through the International Inspiration programme. Through the power of sport and play, this ambitious project is designed to transform the lives of 12 million children and young people in schools and communities in 20 countries around the world.

About 7,000 direct contracts are available to businesses to support the London 2012 Games. This will create supply chains of about 75,000 opportunities.
