Strategic Programme Fund - overseas territories

The Overseas Territories Programme Fund supports the work of government to maintain the security, stability and prosperity of the Overseas Territories.

The Overseas Territories Programme Fund Programme funds make an essential contribution to:

  • managing risks and reducing the UK's liabilities in the Overseas Territories
  • non-discretionary obligations to cover standing commitments such as annual subscriptions to international organisations
  • discretionary funding focusing on the priority areas of security, good governance, contingent liabilities, international obligations and the Polar Regions
  • helping the Overseas Territories meet their environmental challenges through funding the Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP), a joint FCO/DFID Programme.

Funding

In 2009-10, the Overseas Territories Programme Fund spent £6.4 million in support of a wide range of projects across the Overseas Territories. Examples were; building a police station on Tristan da Cunha, disaster management exercises in Montserrat, establishing a marine protected area in the Southern Oceans and environmental education programmes in the British Virgin Islands.

Geographical priorities

The Fund supports projects in the UK's Overseas Territories of Anguilla, Ascension, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Montserrat, Pitcairn, St Helena, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Tristan da Cunha and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Programme's ring-fenced allocation of £500,000 for the Overseas Territories Environment Programme covers all Overseas Territories including the Sovereign Base Areas of Cyprus and Gibraltar.
