Launch of 'The Nordic Countries: From War to Cold War, 1944-1951'

On 1 April 2011 FCO Historians held a conference at Lancaster House to celebrate the publication of the latest volume in the Documents on British Policy Overseas (DBPO) series, The Nordic Countries: From War to Cold War, 1944-1951.

This is the first time a volume in the series has been devoted to the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden.  It covers a period of great importance: the years of the early Cold War when the Nordic region was on the front line in the growing confrontation between East and West.

The event was opened by Matthew Lodge, UK Ambassador to Finland, representing the Nordic-Baltic Network, who read a welcome message from the Foreign Secretary. Alyson Bailes, formerly Ambassador to Finland, gave the keynote address. During the main conference sessions leading Cold War historians from the Nordic countries commented on the volume. The event was organised in close cooperation with the Nordic embassies in London. Around 120 guests attended, including former Finnish Foreign Minister Paavo Rantanen and all five Nordic Ambassadors, together with a number of former Ambassadors, both British and Nordic; as well as FCO colleagues, academics, journalists and students.
