Improving our environmental performance
At the FCO, we are totally committed to improving our environmental performance. This includes preserving natural resources, preventing pollution and minimising, where reasonably practical, any adverse impact on the environment. Our procurement policy reflects these aims and, at the same time, focuses on getting the best value for money.
Included in the Invitation to Tender documents are specific environmental requirements which the supplier needs to be aware of and/or deliver. These are derived from the Government’s Sustainable Operations Policy and targets issued in June 2006. We welcome proposals from suppliers that can improve our environmental performance and provide good value.
We operate an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System at our London and Hanslope Park sites. In support of the Government's Sustainable Development agenda we also encourage potential suppliers to consider the benefits offered by this or similar systems to improve environmental performance.
Opportunities for small and medium enterprises
Even though most of our frequently-used requirements are purchased through centrally-negotiated framework agreements, there is still an opportunity for smaller enterprises to bid for our business – which we encourage.
Similarly, our UK Facilities Management Services — which includes building and grounds maintenance, catering, cleaning and waste disposal — is managed by a single private sector company – Operon.
Useful resources for smaller businesses include:
- the Enterprise Directorate website – which provides small businesses information on dealing with the Government and on new initiatives in this area.
- the Supply2.gov.uk portal – which was developed by the Office of Government Commerce and aims to provide businesses with useful information on bidding for Government contracts. It also provides government contract details and advertised contract opportunities.
- tendering for Government Contracts - A Guide for Small Businesses – which is a booklet which explains how suppliers can access the government marketplace. It also has contact details for government departments. You can receive a hard copy by emailing ServiceDesk@ogc.gsi.gov.uk.
