How to nominate

Honours are given to people from all walks of life and all sections of society.  Anyone can be nominated, but only exceptional people are honoured.  Honours are reserved for people:

  • who have changed things – especially by solid, practical achievement
  • whose work has been of direct benefit to British life or enhanced the UK’s reputation.

How do I nominate someone?

You can nominate someone for an award at any time of the year, by filling out and sending off an honours nomination form.  You will need to describe as vividly and precisely as possible why you think your candidate deserves to be nominated for an award.  Give specific details and recent examples. Show how and where they have made a difference, and what makes their achievements special.

But don’t tell your candidate that you have nominated them.  There is strong competition for honours and it’s kinder not to raise expectations in case the nomination is unsuccessful.

Where do I get the forms?

If your candidate lives in the UK

You can download the form and guidance notes from the UK Honours System website

If your candidate lives outside the UK

There is a different nomination form for candidates who live outside the UK. You can download it and the accompanying guidance notes from this website.

How long will it take?

Processing honours nominations can take 18 months, or longer if the nomination is for an honorary award.
