Languages: English (universally spoken and is the official language), two major Marshallese dialects from the Malayo-Polynesian family, Japanese.

Government: Parliamentary democracy in free association with the USA. A Compact of Free Association entered into force on 21 October 1986 and an amended Compact was signed and entered into force in May 2004. The legislative branch of government Parliament consists of the Nitijela (Parliament) with an advisory council of High Chiefs (Consultative Council of Iroij). The Nitijela has 33 members from 24 districts elected for 4-year terms. Members are called Senators. The Presdent is elected by the Nitijela from amongst its members. The President selects his Cabinet from members of the Nitijela.
