During an interview on 15 July, David Miliband spoke of the 'unique role of the Commonwealth in bringing cultures and countries together'."The Commonwealth, by virtue of its unique membership, can be an effective soft power institution".
During an interview on 15 July, Foreign Secretary David Miliband discussed the uniqueness of the Commonwealth and the important role it plays in bringing together different cultures and countries.
The interview took place ahead of the launch on 20 July of the 'Commonwealth Conversation'. This will be a global debate on the future of the Commonwealth hosted independently by the Royal Commonwealth Society.
The Foreign Secretary said:
"Two billion people are members of the Commonwealth family and I don't think we've done a good enough job at engaging them, talking to them, about the future of the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth was founded on the basis of strong shared values. It does have a potentially unique role in bringing cultures and countries together".
The launch of the Commonwealth Conversation on Monday will be the start of a debate which will run until the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Trinidad in late November.
